I had a lot of freedom when creating this project, which I loved. The project brief explained that I should create a paper collage out of various images, including my face. The end goal was to create a "warped" self portrait. I began by creating my collage mock up, then created the design on paper using the collage as my reference.
Going into this project, I knew I wanted to attempt to create a piece using only stippling as I really enjoy the process. While making this piece, I really focused on being sure there was enough contrast throughout. My goal was to have enough lights and darks throughout the piece, as I wanted it to be dimensional. I also really wanted the dots to be one of the main focuses of the piece. I feel that they don't initially jump out at the viewer, but once the viewer get closer, they are able to notice the detail created with dots in the piece.
I first discovered the art of pointillism while working on this piece. The project brief instructed me to find three black and white images. The goal was to have a set of three photographs that were different in texture, mood, and style. After obtaining my images, I sketched different possibilities to connect them. I wanted to challenge myself with this piece and attempt a style of art I had not experimented with before: stippling.
Using the stippling technique, I was able to control the shades of gray within my piece. This really helped me match and expand the photographs' shades into the middle of my piece. Even though the stippling technique required an immense amount of patience, I realized how much I loved the control. My main goal for this piece was not only to connect the three photographs, but to allow the viewer to have both the photographs and my stippling jump out them.
